Week 14: What have l learnt?

This is the last week before we’ll be having a test for this course. Test? Huhu.. sounds scary. Hopefully, I can do my best for it.

Okay, for this week, I just want to reflect on what I have gone through this course which is from the first week until now.

This course is indeed helping me a lot. I have learnt a lot of IT skills based on the modules that we get. Special thanks to Pn Foziah for giving this valuable knowledge to us 

So, from this course, I have learnt:

1) Computing and internet skills
2) Photo Editing
3) Audio Editing
4) Video Editing
5) Software for ELT

All these knowledge is really helpful in my future teaching in order to have effective teaching and learning process. This is also for me as a future teacher to think of more interesting ways of arousing students’ interest in learning and getting them to participate in classroom activities.

All in all, I would like to thank my lecturer, Pn Foziah, for giving me guidance and feedback in this course.

I hope that I could apply what I have learnt through this course in my future teaching later. Insyaallah 

Week 13: Youtube Video !

This week, we were asked to submit all the tasks that we had completed:

1) E-book
2) Lesson plans
3) Module 2 ( Pictures Editing)

After submitting these tasks, we got another task to be completed. We were assigned to create and produce a video of our own. Sounds interesting, right?

Working with the same partner, Halimah, we decided to make a video about HOLIDAY.

In the process of creating this video, we have to use all the skills that we have learnt before such as inserting the images and audio into the movie maker and many more.

This would be the first time we produced a video of our own. So, I’ve prepared the video for you. Hope you like it 

Week 12: E-Book !

This week’s reflection focuses more on E-Book. At first, I was a bit blurred because I had no idea on how to make an e-book. I thought that we have to produce a very complicated and complex e-book like what we can see in internet.

However, it is different from my first impression. As newbie in technology, we are just assigned to produce an e-book using Microsoft Powerpoint. Therefore, as future teachers, there are a few things that we need to consider when creating e-book for primary school children. The e-book should be:

1) Appealing
2) Using big fonts
3) Colourful and bright pictures
4) Interesting- including animations and sound effects
5) Suitable in terms of language use with their cognitive level

After considering all these aspects, what we have to do for the next step is planning. In our planning, we need to:

1) Select a theme or a topic
2) Choose the setting- time and place
3) Characters involved in the story and their characteristics
4) The plot of the story- conflict, climax, resolution
5) Navigational tool so that the e-book can work properly ( can go to the next page or the previous page)
6) Selection of animations and sound effects to be included in the e-book.

So, the next step would be thinking of the suitable topic for this e-book. My partner and I have chosen the topic of Animals in the Zoo. We plan to introduce some animals with their characteristics.

Here are some of the snapshots of our e-book:

Title: Animals in the Zoo
Theme: Animals
Year: Year 3

Week 11: Meaningful Picture!

Time flies to fast. Can’t believe that we are in week 11 now. There are a few more weeks for completing this course.

Well, this week is still about picture editing. Editing picture is quite easy. However, it is not easy when it comes to ensuring the edited pictures shows meaningful story behind it.

So, my edited picture below is basically about “Holiday” in Langkawi. Let’s see the difference between the picture before and after editing.

BEFORE

AFTER

As you can see, I have put my own picture and a phrase “Holiday in Langkawi”.
It is simple but, it can be used for classroom teaching.

Besides that, we were also asked to create E-Book using Microsoft Powerpoint . For this task, we need to edit pictures and also audio that we have learnt before and incorporate all these things to create the E-Book. Most importantly, we need to ensure that it is suitable for teaching primary school children.
See you next week for my reflection of the E-Book. Thank you 

Week 10: Cut and paste songs~

This week, there are 3 tasks that we need to do. The tasks are:

1) Cut the chorus part of any song to make it a ringtone.
2) Remix two songs together.
3) Edit the song “Dua Insan” by M. Nasir and Siti Nurhaliza.

It was quite tough for me. But, I managed to complete these 3 tasks. At first, I was wondering why we need to do all these tasks. However, I started to realize that it is important to learn audio editing as it would help me to suit my teaching in the future. This is also for making the lessons as interesting as possible and able to engage students in learning.

For editing the audio, Audacity is the appropriate software. I believe that through learning this audio editing, I could carry out interesting activity in my future classroom and I would be able to enhance the students’ learning.

That’s all for this week. See you later ;)

Week 9: Photo Editing

This week is for us to reflect on another module that we get from Pn Foziah which is Module 2- Photo Editing.

In this module, we need to use many picture editing software such as adobe photoshop, photoscape and many more. I’m so happy because this nodule has provided me an opportunity to learn on how to edit pictures.

This is one example of the picture that I’ve edited 

AFTER

BEFORE

Week 8: Audio Editing…

This week, we have to submit Module 1- Computing and Internet Skills. I’m so happy because the module 1 is completed successfully.

But then, we are given another module which is Module 3. This module is about editing audio and there are many audio software in the tutorials such as audacity and sony vegas. Wow! This is new to me. Honestly, I haven’t used these kinds of audio software before.

There are a lot of thing that I have learnt in this module such as cut and paste audio, changing the pitch, increasing and decreasing music tempo and many other things.

Apart from that, we are also given tasks which need to be completed at the end of each module. The tasks require us to do individually, in pairs and also in groups. The tasks are basically about designing and preparing teaching aids and we need to compile it. After that, we need to prepare lesson plans.
All in all, we managed to complete all the tasks and submit the tasks to Pn Foziah in time.

That’s it for this week. See you later!

Week 7: Completing Module in Progress~

This week, there is nothing much we did. Thanks to Pn Foziah for allowing us to spend the 3 hours for completing the first module.

The module is really THICK for me. It is impossible for me to finish it within two weeks because there are a lot of applications that are very new to me. Most of the time, I have difficulty in following the steps in the module.

Before class ends, Pn Foziah asked us to go to her office this coming Thursday because we are going to get a new module which is Module 3- Audio Editing.
That’s all for this week. What’s next? Wait for my 8th reflection next week. Bye ;)

Week 6: First Module~

For this week, we were given a task which is needs to be completed within 2 weeks. The task is based on Module 1- Computer and Internet Skills. It’s indeed a very THICK module. That’s why we were given 2 weeks for completing it.

In the module, it consists of the most basic component of technology such as:
1) Web Search
2) Downloading
3) Uploading
4) Encoding
5) Storing
6) Scanning
7) Burning
8) Sending e-mail
9) Compressing files
10) File conversion

This task requires 20 marks. We are asked to complete this module within 2 weeks, but we need to compile it as a portfolio by the end of the semester.

At first, I couldn’t believe that I had to complete this thick module individually. However, I realize that it has a lot of benefits as it provides new knowledge for us to upgrade our technology-based skills. There are many things that I have learnt from this module.

Week 5: :: Teaching Aids ::

TEACHING AIDS…. This term is definitely familiar with us. This is one of the aspects that we need to consider when planning a lesson.

So, for this week, we were given a new task by Pn Foziah. The task requires us to design and prepare teaching aids for year 4, 5 and 6. We were assigned according to the topics in the English primary school syllabus. My partner for this task is Halimah and the topics are “Getting Connected”, “Bountiful Harvest” and “The Sounds of Music”.
We have to design and prepare all the teaching aids to be used for all stages during teaching and learning process (pre, while and post).
The task was done! These are a few teaching aids that we have used in our lessons.

YEAR 4: GETTING CONNECTED

YEAR 5: BOUNTIFUL HARVEST

YEAR 6: SOUNDS OF MUSIC

Week 4: No Class !

For this week, there is nothing to be reflected. Why? Because the class has been cancelled. We have no class because our lecturer, Pn Foziah need to attend a course. No class does not mean that no task at all. I asked my friends from other class and they said that we started having a lot of works.

Well, my next fifth reflection is for reflecting on the works that I’ve mentioned earlier.

That’s it for this week. See you on my next reflection. Bye !

Week 3: Getting to Understand Children !

Hello and assalamualaikum everyone especially to Madam Foziah and Cohort Five.… There are 2 more years to go before we end our teaching training course and from that moment, we will be called “teacher” by our future students, insyaallah. However, do we really know how children go through their growing process? We should realize that every child is different in terms of their growing process. They are unique as they have different learning styles, different preferences, and they also have their own ability in grasping new knowledge.

As future teacher, we are trained to be aware of these aspects. Why should we lean about all these things? There are many reasons for this question. We should be aware of children’s differences so that we will be able to carry out effective teaching and learning process. By knowing these aspects, we can also make reflections on our teaching whether they are able to understand what we teach or it goes the other way around. Then, based on the reflections, we as teachers will be able to think of and plan more effective teaching strategies in order to give them better understanding in their learning. This would definitely help teacher to create an optimal learning condition for the children. The optimal learning condition would be the best environment for students to learn. This is essential in order for teachers to have students who become leaders and grow within the classroom.

For this week, we focused on the qualities that help children in learning foreign language and how teacher can build on them. There are 6 components of children’s abilities that may help them in foreign language classroom. Those components are as follows:

1) Children’s ability to grasp meaning- In terms of language development, the message-interpreting skill of the children is part of the way they learn new words, concepts, and expressions. Therefore teachers should make full use of gestures, intonation, demonstration, actions, and facial expressions to convey meaning so that they could have better understanding in learning foreign language.

2) Children’s creative use of limited language resources- Children have the ability to use many ways for conveying the meaning even they do not know the word or grammatical structure for what they want to say. This actually occurs in language classroom even without teacher’s help. This occurs especially when there are activities that generate real interaction or call on the imagination. Therefore, games play an important role as they are not just for fun, but they could create a desire to communicate and also unpredictability.

3) Children’s capacity for indirect learning- Learning occurs in two ways, directly and indirectly. Children sometimes learn better than the way they should be learning. This means that they tend to focus on other things else although teachers are controlling the activity fairly closely. According to Halliwell ( 1992), this is part of the rather complex phenomenon of indirect learning. This would be an advantage for teachers to use language activities which involve them in guessing what phrase or word someone has thought of.

4) Children’s instinct for play and fun- Children are always trying to find and make fun. This would be an advantage for teachers to create activities such as guessing activities. Through their sense of fun and play, children are living the language for real.

5) The role of imagination- The capacity for fantasy and imagination has a very constructive part to play in the language classroom. It would be good if teachers could incorporate the elements of imagination and fantasy. As a result, the teachers would be able to create activities that provide very powerful stimulus for real language use.

6) The instinct for interaction and talk- This is the most important for the language teachers. This is because the instinct for interaction and talk is one of the most powerful motivators for using the language. As teachers, we are to make sure that the desire to talk is for learning, not against learning.

To understand better about these 6 components, we were assigned to be in groups and each group would have to present one of the elements as mentioned above.

The tasks were as follows:

1. Read through all the section of the selected component.
2. Pick up important part.
3. Search materials that enhance learning based on the component.
4. Prepare a power point presentation.

These are a few pictures of our presentation:

Week 2 : New Topic... What is it???

When it comes to typing, it's not a big deal for us because we are used to it. however, one good question to ask yourself : How fast can you type?

I think that many of us can type 100 words in just a few minutes (especially when doing last minute assignment)hehe...

This week, class began with the introduction of how to type properly by Pn. Foziah. This would also help us to type faster. Wow, i never thought that there's a particular way to put our fingers on the keyboard when typing. Once again, this is new to me. for example, the pointing fingers of our hands should be placed on certain letters.

The pointing fingers of our left hand should be placed on the "F" key and the pointing finger of our right hand should be placed on the "G" key.
We were also given the software for us to practice our typing skill. I've tried it once... it's really hard man!!! I should keep on trying... Thanks Pn. Foziah for giving us the software.

Well, time to sleep. That's all peeps!

Week 1: This is NEW!!!

NAME : MUHAMMAD ANUAR B. RAMELI
MATRIC NUMBER: PEH080038

The best thing about this subject ( PBEY3102- Using and Developing Resources for ESL Classroom) is that we have to create a blog. This sounds quite interesting for some people but not for me. This is because i know NOTHING about blog. Can someone teach me??? huhu...

Anyway, this subject is about using variety of resources in classroom and focuses more on the use of technology in teaching and learning process. Several examples would be the use of computers, social networking sites and many more.

Now, let me introduce our lecturer for this subject. Her name is Pn. Foziah bt. Mahmood. We are divided into 2 big groups (Group 1 and Group 2)and i'm in Group 2. i hope that i can get as much knowledge as possible from this subject so that i would be able to use variety of resources when teaching in the future.

That's it. see ya! ;)
